That guy I know named "dad"

So, here is some more stuff that I found.  This super short, which is lame cause it's a long long reel.  There is also a lot of mixed up stuff cause it sounds like he tried to use the same reel for multiple stuff and then it just cuts out.
The first part of a song is totally new to me and then it shifts into a new song that is much more quiet.  This song I recognize because my father recently started playing and recording again and this was one of his big songs that he pulled out of his memory.

Poco

Well, on to the next reel.

This one was a full rock band and I know my dad played and recorded with a few bands back in the day, but this was obviously professionally mixed and recorded.

I digitized the whole album and turns out it's Poco's A Good Feelin' to Know.  But it's not an official case and I could be wrong, but I don't think they ever put this out on reel-to-reel.

You know what that means.  That's right.  This is the old school version of torrent sharing!

So, normally I'd put this on, but I'm not really interested in having any legal battles (at least not with this blog).

Oh, weird.  I'm listening to it now and there's a version of the Ballad of Barbara Allen, but I don't know how it is.  Also, professionally done.  So, it's not my dad either.

Film in the family

This is not my father, surprisingly.

Well, actually, not so surprisingly. All these reels were given to me by my mother about eight years ago. Originally, I thought they were all just her old 8mm films from when she was a girl (films and embarrassment soon to come). But one of those films was not 8mm, but 16mm (higher quality and not often used for home movie making).

I started watching it and turns out it was an underground educational documentary made by some hippie commune in the 70's. And I thought, "Oh, someone just wanted to learn about organic farming and got this film." But then the voice over of a man came on and it was very strange. It was familiar, but I couldn't quite place it.

Then the end credits rolled along and the name "Ray Scruggs" rolled across screen, my mother's brother. I was floored. First to learn that Ray made films, but also that the film was pretty good - it won't get shown at Sundance, but still well done. And as a filmmaker myself I had no idea that we had another filmmaker in the family.

In that same box were my father's old reel recordings that I'm uploading here, but this one is actually the original reel of Ray recording the voice over track that was later married to the 16mm print.

Q: What happens when you are an young aspiring teenage musician and you make a bunch of recordings, then you grow up and have a son that is into old quirky things like reel to reel recording decks and in the mean time you lost all your reel to reel recordings of yourself when you were young?

A: Revenge.
